Innovative Intervention – Community outreach in LGCPL

Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh is diverse, rain-fed, underinvested, vulnerable, socio-economically heterogeneous, ethnically unique, agrarian and backward. The area with limited or inadequate groundwater resources, lacks infrastructure, access to improved technologies, markets and inputs with low productivity. Farming system of crops and livestock is the main occupation whereas outsourcing livelihood by seasonal migration minimizes risks and vulnerability. Rainfall is in the range of 500 to 700 mm.

To resolve these problems, Kamalnayan Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Lalitpur in consultation with local community and collaboration with development stakeholders, has been implementing various need-based innovative programmes like Integrated water resources development, promoting efficient and judicious use of available water through less water-intensive crops and micro-irrigation systems, promotion of Horticulture crops, Natural farming, Women’s empowerment through self-help groups and promotion of wadi (horticulture farming) project in collaboration with NABARD, Skill and entrepreneurship training, promotion of Biogas etc. as part of the corporate social responsibility of Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited ( LPGCL). This, along with basic infrastructure development programmes, has been initiated to strengthen the livelihood of the distressed agrarian community of Lalitpur district.

With these integrated efforts Bajaj Foundation has reached to 37 villages benefitting 30,515 households covering a population of 1.22 lakh and also benefitted 13,521 acres of farming land.
